File Formats
Which formats should I use for meshes versus Gaussian splats?
Choose your pipeline before scanning:
- Meshes: export
.glbor.glTFif you need editable geometry, UVs, and animation. - Gaussian splats: export
.ply,.spz, or.splatwhen capturing real-world scenes as point clouds.
Switching later is difficult, so pick the correct format family right from the start of your capture.
Which capture apps do you recommend for creating splats or meshes?
Several mobile and desktop tools export directly to supported formats:
- Scaniverse (iOS/Android) →
.obj,.ply,.fbx - Polycam (LiDAR + photogrammetry) →
.obj,.ply,.fbx,.stl - RealityScan (Epic Games) →
.obj,.glbvia Sketchfab - Postshot (Windows) →

How can I change the format of my splats (e.g., from .ply to .spz)?

I've created a scan with Scaniverse and got an .obj file - how can I use it inside Arrival.Space?
In Scaniverse you can change the format when creating/exporting. Select .ply format and then you can upload it directly to Arrival.Space as e.g. Main Asset.
How can I clean or convert my files before uploading?
Use desktop editors to prep your assets:
- Blender — decimate meshes, bake textures, or convert
.obj/.fbxto.glb. - SuperSplat — convert point clouds into smoother splat renderings.
- MeshLab — clean scans, remove noise, and export lighter
.plyfiles.
Optimizing before upload keeps file sizes manageable and speeds up processing inside Arrival.Space.
